Tony Kake has been CEO of Papakura Marae since 2010. As CEO, Tony has played a pivotal role in growing Papakura Marae to be a key cultural and social hub for the local Māori community. Under his leadership, the marae has become a center for cultural events, community gatherings, and educational programs, fostering a sense of belonging and identity amongst its members. He has driven the establishment of nine Kaumātua whare at Papakura Marae, acknowledging Kaumātua as an integral and valued part of the Marae. He has enabled many partnerships with government agencies, Māori entities and the private sector to flourish and be responsive to whānau. He demonstrates an inclusive and respectful leadership style based on principles of Tika, Pono and Aroha. He has played an active role in advancing the interests of Māori through key leadership and governance roles, including as Chair of Kia Puawai Youth Horizons Trust, Chair of the Community Impact Forum for the Department of Corrections – Te Ara Poutama, a Trustee of Mananui Arataki Charitable Trust, and a member of the Independent Māori Statutory Board of the Auckland Council.
Tony has a strong community focus and was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2022 New Years Honours, for his services to Māori. He has also been recognized for his outstanding service and leadership within the community, being awarded: the Māori Community Service Award: Presented for his dedication to improving the lives of Māori families and promoting Whānau Ora initiatives; the Papakura Local Excellence Award: Acknowledged his efforts in strengthening community ties and enhancing the cultural richness of Papakura; and the Ministry of Social Development’s Community Leadership Award: Recognized for his innovative programs that address social issues affecting Māori families and individuals.
Through his ongoing commitment to Whānau Ora and the revitalization of Papakura Marae, Kake has become a key figure in advocating for the rights and empowerment of Māori people in New Zealand, leaving a lasting legacy for future generations.
